Should You Choose A Touring Or Static Caravan?

Although they may share a similar name, most people can spot straight away that touring caravans and static caravans (often referred to as holiday homes) are very different beasts. Whilst one is designed as an affordable way to have a holiday home in a single desirable UK location, the other is a great value way to enjoy holidays all around the UK and Europe.

For most of us a traditional 'bricks and mortar' holiday home just isn't financially possible, so a static caravan holiday home acts as the next best thing, and at a fraction of the cost. Plus with new models often coming fitted with flat screen TV's, central heating, domestic style bathrooms and kitchens, plus modern fixtures, fittings and furniture, many would argue that it's hard to tell the difference!

It's true that statics offer a very high level of comfort and a 'home away from home' feeling that is hard to replicate in a touring caravan, no matter how high the specification may be. Static caravans give you the opportunity to relax in familiar surroundings and have everything you need close to hand, no airports, no queues, no hassle.

Statics are also much less 'hands on' than tourers as they don't require you to un-hitch the caravan and setup camp so to speak, just turn up, put the kettle on and relax!

However, the fundamental flaw (or benefit depending on your viewpoint) with a static caravan is that you don't have the option to try a new location each time you want to go on holiday, unlike a tourer caravan which gives you unlimited options when it comes to destination choices.

When caravanners are asked "Why do you like holidaying in a touring caravan?" one of the most common replies will always include the word "Freedom". And that's a great indicator of why many people love caravanning, it gives you the freedom to go away on a whim and to try out new locations whenever you feel like it, without having to spend a fortune. It's that level of choice and independence that is the main advantage a touring caravan has over a static caravan holiday home.

The way in which you buy a touring caravan or static caravan holiday home is also very different. Generally a static will be purchased through the park owner, so you may be limited to what they offer.

Obviously tourers are very different, and are generally sold through specialist dealerships which can be found throughout the UK.

However, a good opportunity to view holiday homes and touring caravans in one place is at the various caravan trade shows, particularly the 'Caravan Extravaganza' trade show held in September at The Lawns in Cottingham (near Hull), and the 'International Caravan & Motorhome' show held at the NEC in Birmingham during October (dates change slightly every year so check online).

Of course if you are looking at statics you need to bear in mind the park you want the unit to be sited on, and either purchase through the park or ask if you can purchase that particular caravan and then have it sited. Every park is different so check with the park operator before committing to buy.

It's also worth remembering that static caravans can be rented for a week's holiday at locations throughout the UK, many of which also have units for sale, so why not try before you buy and see if a static is right for you?

Caravans are available for rent from a limited number of companies in the UK, but many caravan insurance policies will allow for 'friends and family use' so why not see if you can borrow one for a weekend instead?
